oh, bic! thanks for the laughs. what are you thinking?

I saw this in one of my daily marketing emails and I have to share. I got the biggest laugh out of it. "Bic for Her" pens, which are actually described as "beautifully smooth" in the technical specs as being "designed to fit comfortably in a woman's hand" with an "attractive barrel design available in pink and purple," are getting some hilarious reviews on Amazon.com and other consumer sites. Real reviews below:

—When I saw these I just had to have them, so I asked my Husband to buy them for me. He refused, as he said that owning a pen might make me Think, and then have Ideas Of My Own. Then I might start to Write, which would take time away from my wifely duties such as Cooking, Cleaning, and Bearing Children. Of course he was Absolutely Right, none of these tasks require a pen, and so I have to give these one star.

—Oh. My. God. I've been doing it all wrong. There was me thinking I didn't need to worry about whether my writing implement sufficiently reflected my gender. Thank you so much Bic for showing me the error of my ways. Perhaps Bic will also bring out a new range of pink (or purple) feminine spanners, screwdrivers, electric drills and angle grinders so that I can carry out my job as a bicycle mechanic without further embarrassing myself? Luckily my male colleagues have managed to keep their disapproval of my use of their masculine tools to themselves. I'm so ashamed. And re-educated as to my place in society. Thanks again Bic!

—I bought this pen (in error, evidently) to write my reports of each day's tree felling activities in my job as a lumberjack. It is no good. It slips from between my calloused, gnarly fingers like a gossamer thread gently descending to earth between two giant redwood trunks.

—This pen is great. I bought it for all my female friends and relatives. It enabled them, finally, to write things (although they may not yet know to do so on paper; but you can only expect so much, really). I thought they were just a bit slow. My mother, a hard-working woman who raised twelve kids single-handedly whilst doing all the ironing (as nature intended), was furtively abashed by her illiteracy. Long would she gaze upon her husband and sons' scrawlings and would dedicate five minutes a day (which she really should have spent making sandwiches) to pray that one day she would be granted the ability to create such scribbles of her own. She's still a little slow on the uptake, but this product has definitely helped start the ball rolling. We tried to give her men's pens but she used to rip the cartridges out and drink the ink. Typical woman. Anyway, it's good that BIC are finally doing something to aid the plight of women. Hopefully a range of 'for her' paperclips is on the horizon - my wife has an awful time keeping her recipes together.

—I tried these on a whim, and I have to say I wasn't very impressed. The applicator mechanism is far too fiddly, and the plastic tampon inside far too thin (not to mention uncomfortable and non-absorbant) - I'm sure there must be a knack to using them, but I couldn't find it. They also stained my knickers blue for some reason. I really wanted to like these, but it's back to pads for me.

don't stop believing.

so much of the holiday season is about believing. for children, it's believing in santa clause and all the wonder of his magical reindeer and sleigh. for many adults, it's celebrating religious beliefs and faith. for the greater community, the holidays bring on a time of charity and remind people to help others and believe in the greater good.

i've just recently realized that it's also about believing in yourself.  it's a time to reflect on the past year and think about what's to come in the next chapter. in many ways, believing in yourself and your capabilities is the most important thing you can believe in, but often the hardest.

a gratitude list.

Thanksgiving was the first major holiday Danny and I spent together. It was 2008. We were newly engaged. The six years before that we'd both gone home for the holidays. I'm glad we waited. It made it that much more special, the families understood and our engagement suddenly felt very real. But now I'm so happy we celebrate together.

Like many married couples we're faced with the "every other holiday" schedule. This year is technically Bockting Thanksgiving and Schramm Christmas but we're attempting to do both this week. We'll celebrate turkey day with the Schramm's in San Diego for a few days and then fly back for a Thanksgiving weekend with the Bocktings.

...i'm thankful for...
danny, a wonderful best friend & husband.
the past 8 years we've been in love.
that we found each other so young.
my parents... my mom. my dad.
my two brothers, their other halves and the beautiful children they've made.
that i didn't get stuck with crazy in-laws.
southwest rapid rewards vouchers & companion pass.
girlfriends turned pseudo-sisters.
the real & close relationship i have with both my mother and father-in-law.
family in arizona - earl, tricia and her expanding belly.
huntie our furry son, the sweetest french bulldog in the world.
the 3.5 hilarious years we had with our silly sydney.
leggings.
a handy hubby who created our cozy home.
our health.
handwritten cards from family & friends.
so many amazing vacations, travels and experiences this year.
the iPhone 4 & my macbook pro.
uncle bob's move out west.
the kind of friends you can't imagine life without.
postino and the many long conversations about life we've had there.
arizona's ten months of patio weather.
pandora and music in general.
the not-so-bad outcome of our kitchen fire and that i didn't hurt anyone.
vitamins that are making my hair grow - finally.
....now it's your turn to make a list.

...from our family to yours...
{happy thanksgiving}

life and loss.

The past couple months we've been hit hard by the reality that death is a part of life. It sucks. It's hard. And there never seems to be a good explanation - especially lately. Each death has hit close to home and all the lives have been taken way too soon... Erica's wonderful mom, our little Sydney baby, a close friend of Jared's, and this morning we're attending a memorial after a tragic and unexpected loss of Danny's friend and co-worker, a young & healthy husband and father of three.

We have a hard time with death. The unknown of it. The unexpectedness and feeling of helplessness of the situation. The why us? Why them? The what if's? The pain thinking about the families left behind. The waves of emotion... first the shock and pain and then the sadness as things slow down and the reality of the loss sets in. I keep telling Danny that I wish the "gig was up" and we could just have Syd back now.

As we sit and think about all these losses we try to find peace in them. But how? The old "everything happens for a reason" explanation just doesn't cut it lately. For us, each loss has encouraged us to take a good look at our life and we encourage you to do the same. More than ever before, we truly believe that life is a gift and it can end at any time without any forewarning - so live it up.

Stop waiting to live your life. Go give your loved ones a hug. Let go of the grudges you're holding. Book that vacation you've always wanted to take. Splurge and have dessert tonight. Go surprise an old friend or relative with a visit. Dance. Avoid unnecessary stresses. Don't take your work home with you. Spend your bonus check on something fun. Make time for your hobbies and the things you love. Laugh. Focus on good.

Lately, none of this sounds cliche anymore.

thought of the day.

Saw this while having some wine at Postino recently (are you starting to catch on that we go here a lot?). We liked it, so I snapped a photo. Pretty simple and to the point. Happy Tuesday!
